5 Mental Health Apps that Help with my Anxiety

If you know me or you’ve been following me for a while, you probably know that I have anxiety and I am constantly learning what that means and the best way for me to cope.

Anxiety is one of the most common mental illnesses in the United States. Almost 20% of adults are diagnosed with it. But even though so many people live with it, I feel like it’s rarely talked about.

After years of trying to understand what anxiety is and what it means for me, I’ve come across some apps that I use almost daily to sort out my thoughts and help me not stress the little things.

I figured since these apps have helped me so much, I would compile a list of my 5 favorites and share them with y’all!

*Disclaimer: I do not claim that these apps will work for everyone. Through trial and error, I have learned that these are things that work for me, but everyone’s anxiety is different.


  1. Calm

This is without a doubt my favorite. I use the free version and features, but there are even more features to enjoy if you pay monthly. My favorite thing about this app, and what I use it for most, is the breathing feature. Just set the timer for how long you want to meditate for and enjoy relaxation!

2. Down Dog

This app is equally as amazing. It’s a yoga app that is completely customizable to you. Choose your level, the type of yoga, what part of the body you want to boost, the length of the workout and cool down at the end, and you have a workout perfect for your needs. You can even choose the background music and the voice (I use an Australian man named Chad). The only downside is that there’s a monthly payment of $5.99 after your first three sessions. But I promise you, SO WORTH IT!

3. Breeze

Breeze is a mood tracker. At the end of each day, I select how I’ve felt that day (on a scale of unhappy to happy) and I make sure to identify what made me feel that way. The app keeps track of everything I say and I am able to recognize what activities make me feel good and which ones don’t.

4. What’s Up

Not only is What’s Up a great app for managing anxiety, but depression, stress, anger and more! There’s so much to love about this app, but the most helpful are the tips and tricks that are offered. From breathing techniques to forums to games that keep you present, you’re almost guaranteed to find something that will help you in any situation.

5. MindShift

The last app that I want to mention is MindShift. The app distinguishes between different types of anxiety (general, social, perfectionism, etc.) so you get the best help for what you’re experiencing. I find myself opening this app when I’m struggling to identify what I need.
